Breakfast bags for everyone who cycled to TU Wien
On 3 June, numerous TU Wien employees and students came to the university by bike and picked up their well-deserved breakfast bags — despite the rainy and rather uninviting weather. While some TU members decided not to cycle because of the weather, others made a conscious choice to get on their bikes precisely because it was Bicycle Day. For that, we say: thank you!
The cycleFIT teams were present at all TU Wien locations throughout the day. In numerous conversations, they provided information about the project, exchanged ideas with visitors and collected valuable suggestions for further promoting cycling mobility at TU Wien. At the Getreidemarkt location, the Radlobby was also represented with an information stand and invited visitors to exchange views on all aspects of cycling.
Supporting programme at all locations
The supporting programme also offered plenty of opportunities to get involved: at the Gußhaus campus, interested participants were able to test their knowledge in short quiz rounds and take home small instant prizes. At Karlsplatz and Getreidemarkt, the HTU cargo bike course provided fun and gave participants the opportunity to try out their skills on unfamiliar terrain. At Karlsplatz, the programme was complemented by a workshop on bike ergonomics, which offered valuable tips for a healthy and comfortable riding position.
Closing event at Karlsplatz defied the weather
At around 5:00 p.m., the time had finally come: for the large closing event at Karlsplatz, not only the participants in the various activities who had qualified for the prize draw gathered, but also interested visitors who wanted to experience the award ceremony and the finale live. Despite the changeable weather, this created an atmospheric setting for bringing the day to a close together. Creative and exciting contributions had been submitted in all four participation categories — here is a small selection.
Even though the weather still did not quite cooperate, it did not dampen the mood. Kurt Weninger from the cycleFIT team opened the closing event and welcomed the guests in attendance. Rector Jens Schneider then addressed a few words to the participants and warmly thanked them for their commitment and participation. He emphasised that the cycleFIT project — one of the TU Wien projects funded as part of the fuTUrefit process — was particularly close to his heart as an enthusiastic cyclist. As a thank-you for his support, Kurt Weninger presented the Rector with the first of the cycleFIT duffel bags produced especially for the event.
Quiz on cycling at TU Wien
Then things got exciting: the prize draw began. The participants in the TU Bike Rally, who had visited all six TU Wien locations by bike, as well as the winners of the “Show Your Bike” categories, had already qualified directly for the final round. All other participants first had to secure their place.
In a preliminary round designed as a quiz with questions about cycling mobility at TU Wien, the remaining places in the final were awarded. Those who did not make it through still did not go away empty-handed and were able to enjoy a consolation prize.
In the first round of the final selection, the finalists were then determined. Here, too, the rule was: no one went home without a prize; all participants who were eliminated received a small reward.
Then the grand finale began. Round after round, the lead changed, and the excitement among the audience noticeably increased. The final decision was made only with the last question. The winners were then called to the stage one by one to receive their prizes — from 11th place all the way to first place.
At the end, only two participants remained in the running. The tension reached its peak before the final decision was made.
We warmly congratulate all the winners and hope they enjoy their cycling-related prizes. In addition to bike helmets, high-quality locks and many other goodies, the top ten participants can also look forward to a one-year subscription to the Radlobby magazine “Drahtesel”.
Of course, the winner of the cycleFIT bicycle has every reason to be especially pleased!
A thank-you
A heartfelt thank-you also goes to the entire organising team and to all sponsors who contributed to the success of this day.
We would like to thank all participants in the activities surrounding Bicycle Day at TU Wien and are already looking forward to next year’s edition!
