How can we move sustainably in the future? This question is at the heart of cycleFIT’s contribution to the Long Night of Research 2026 on April 24, 2026. From 5:00 to 11:00 p.m., TU Wien invites visitors to its Getreidemarkt location to explore mobility from new perspectives.
Under the theme of sustainability, cycleFIT makes research tangible and accessible. At several interactive stations, visitors gain insights into current questions in transport planning and can actively participate. Why is it often difficult to give up using a private car? At an interactive pinboard, visitors can guess and discuss real reasons, ranging from insufficient alternatives to everyday challenges. A special highlight is the so-called “Gehzeug”: a wooden frame that makes the space occupied by a car in public areas visible and physically tangible.
Urban mobility behavior is also in focus. Visitors can estimate the so-called modal split and take part in a live survey. Using simple tools such as LEGO bricks, the spatial distribution of different modes of transport is illustrated. In addition, the “StreetTUner” tool allows users to digitally redesign street spaces and set their own priorities.
Another part of the program invites visitors to reflect on Vienna’s cycling network from a user perspective: Where are the gaps, danger zones, or bottlenecks? These can be recorded directly on site and will feed into the ongoing work of cycleFIT. The program is aimed at all age groups, from children to adults, and is fully accessible.
