Why ‘Courage’? The transformation of monofunctional roads – designed for speed and efficiency – into multifunctional public spaces requires courage: in the design, in the ambition, in the process design, in public engagement, and in breaking new ground – on the part of all stakeholders, including politicians, the public sector, the retail sector and citizens. International examples show, however, that courage pays off!

‘COURAGE’ presents international examples of the transformation of street spaces which, despite differing approaches, various project types and unique local contexts, have one thing in common: the courage to conceive, design and implement change.

It was particularly important to us not only to highlight high-profile projects, but above all to present examples that stand out precisely because of individual innovative solutions and process steps, as well as their implementation and persistence in the face of resistance.
