Higher Geodesy celebrated its 160th anniversary at TU Wien. On June 23, 1866, Emperor Franz Joseph, in a “Supreme Decree,” appointed Joseph Herr—then professor of Practical Geometry—as the first professor of Higher Geodesy and Spherical Astronomy. Exactly 160 years later, many generations of graduates and (former) staff members of Higher Geodesy gathered at TU Wien for a homecoming event to reflect on the illustrious past and recent shared history. In addition to insights into the history of the chair and the curriculum, participants received the latest information on research areas and challenges in Satellite Navigation and Very Long Baseline Interferometry. The event concluded with us sharing anecdotes and memories, exchanging life stories, and spending plenty of time chatting and laughing. It was a great pleasure for us to spend a festive and convivial afternoon and evening with so many colleagues who had traveled from near and far.
