Living in Vienna: practical information

Visa & residence permit for your studies in Vienna/Austria

Once you have successfully completed the admission procedure, TU Wien Academy issues an official Admission Letter as well as a Letter of Admission in German. You can present these documents to the Austrian embassy or consulate in your home country to support your visa application. Please note that we can only provide these documents – the visa application itself must be submitted by you in person and locally.

A residence permit for students requires a number of different documents, which must be submitted to MA 35 in Vienna. The MA 35 website is unfortunately only available in German, but here are some examples of the documents required (as of July 2025; the list is not exhaustive – please check directly with MA 35):

  • Completed and signed application for a residence permit (in German)
  • Valid travel document (e.g. passport)
  • Current biometric passport photo (not older than six months when the residence permit is issued)
  • Proof of regular expenses, e.g. accommodation costs
  • Proof of health insurance valid in Austria covering all risks
  • Proof of secured means of subsistence in Austria:
    • For people in education (e.g. students) under 24: at least €703.58 per month (as of July 2025)
    • For people in education aged 24 and over: at least €1,273.99 per month (as of July 2025)
    • Special provisions apply to married people, people in a partnership and for each child – please check directly.

As mentioned, these are only some examples of the documents required. We ask for your understanding that we cannot apply for the student residence permit on your behalf. Applying in good time is your own responsibility.
