In collaboration with ASFINAG - Austria’s agency for highway planning, financing, construction, and maintenance - ILF Consulting Engineers, and GWT Group as the plant manufacturer, we’re working on a groundbreaking pilot project to treat salty runoff from winter road maintenance in water protection facilities. Why? To recover and concentrate salt for reuse, combining ecological and economic benefits in sustainable water management.

• Our pilot plant shows that even conventional water protection systems can be further optimized: by treating and recycling salt loads, more compact facilities can be designed, reducing land use and preserving valuable resources.
• Innovative desalination technologies such as electrodialysis are used in the pilot plant. The results achieved this winter period demonstrate that the project goals can be met and that the concept represents an exciting and promising approach for sustainable water management. The next steps include optimizing the technical systems and planning how the concept can be integrated into the standard road maintenance service’s workflow.
